I was an apprentice to a fine artist for about a year when I got out of college. Free-lance cartoons landed me a job with Randall Publishing doing pasteup for trade shoppers in the heavy construction and trucking industries.
That job led to Vulcan Publication where I was Art Director and Production Manager, responsible for a department that grew from me and one typesetter to 35 people. We designed and produced weekly trade shoppers, plus monthly consumer and industry magazines. We turned over a lot of pages every week and while I produced some good design there it was heavy on the Production work. So I left after 4 years to focus on design and started Johnston Design Group.
The Group ranged from a group of one (me) to a lineup of 4 in addition to me. I did a range of work - logos, single ads, campaigns, editorial design, and won a number of ADDYs for it, too. I kept this up for the next 20 years and picked up digital design in the late-90s-early-2000s.
A little over 7 years ago I accepted a position at the Creative Services Center of the New York Times Regional Media Group and am still there today although the named has changed a few times. While here I have continued design work with the group's 36 newspapers, magazines and numerous websites. I lead a team of 9 designers in this work and also develop new digital products and meet daily deadlines.
Around 2 years ago I added Corporate Marketing to my responsibilities and I develop branding campaigns, media kits, product sales sheets, posters, logos and event collateral. I do this for specific papers as well as developing the corporate look and feel for advertising and products.
This was the bulk of my work in the mid-1990s as I designed and produced consumer magazines (newsstand and subscription) in the hunting and fishing markets and also in the trucking and heavy construction industries. As I got more into web design I got away from editorial design, but about 6 years ago merged these together in developing digital-only magazines in the hunting, fishing and trucking markets.
